[Editor's note: The following is the text, as submitted by author, of the Q & A of
Bruce T. Royal, a Democratic candidate for Treasurer, Montgomery County,
Pennsylvania, responding to the CAMC's questions. sjk] |
|
CAMC | : | Why are you running for the public office? |
Royal | : | I believe we must all give back to our community some small part of
ourselves. I believe that my years of experience as an accountant and attorney and the skills I have acquired in this work may be applied to the good of the community in the office of treasurer. |
CAMC | : | What will you bring about, if elected, to the office? |
Royal | : | My objectives in office will be to do the following:
- Improve tax collections through information technology applications
- Cut in half the $30 million tax debt owed to the County by delinquent
taxpayers
- Enable programs to provide property tax relief for older residents with
low incomes
|
CAMC | : | Why should this community support you? |
Royal | : | I am the best qualified candidate, by training, education, experience and overall finical management skills acquired over the past 30 years in the public and private sector. In my 20s I served as an auditor/accountant for the U.S. Treasury in Washington D.C. and responsible for auditing the results of the Treasury's debt auctions through the Federal Reserve Bank system. In my 30s I advised Marriott corporation in its limited partnership hotel development financing transactions. |
CAMC | : | Why should this community not support your opponent? |
Royal | : | I do not know my opponent well. However I believe he is a criminal
lawyer. I believe that he is not as qualified as I for the job.
Rather, he is the typical candidate for election offered up by the Republican party, a person whose training, education and background in no way prepared him to do the job. He is a person who views his service as a means to an end, yet another candidate handed a position in government by the party leadership, chosen not for a match of skills
with needs of the job but loyalty to the party leadership and a willing participant in his party's scheme of advancement. |
CAMC | : | What commitment do you offer to this community for its support? |
Royal | : | The Korean community, as with all other ethnic minorities, will find
a listening ear in my administration. The office of treasurer will reach out to all communities to convey the nature of the office's obligations to the taxpayers. Those "retail" functions of the office will be made more accessible to the community. Service to the taxpayer will be a key component of my administration. |
